Engine Configuration

Optimize engine settings for your hardware and analysis needs.

Hash Size

Memory allocated for the engine's transposition table

Recommendation

25-50% of your total RAM

Impact:

Higher values improve analysis strength, especially in longer analyses

Adjust based on your system specifications

Examples:

  • 4GB RAM → 1024-2048 MB Hash
  • 8GB RAM → 2048-4096 MB Hash
  • 16GB RAM → 4096-8192 MB Hash

Threads

Number of CPU cores the engine can use

Recommendation

Match your CPU core count

Impact:

More threads = faster analysis, but diminishing returns after physical cores

Adjust based on your system specifications

Examples:

  • 4-core CPU → 4 threads
  • 8-core CPU → 8 threads
  • 16-core CPU → 12-16 threads

MultiPV

Number of best moves to show simultaneously

Recommendation

3-5 for analysis, 1 for games

Impact:

Higher values show more options but slow down analysis

Adjust based on your system specifications

Examples:

  • Analysis → 3-5 lines
  • Tournament prep → 1-2 lines
  • Learning → 5-10 lines

Skill Level

Artificial strength limitation (Stockfish only)

Recommendation

20 (maximum) for analysis

Impact:

Lower values make engine play weaker moves for practice

Adjust based on your system specifications

Examples:

  • Beginner practice → 5-10
  • Intermediate practice → 10-15
  • Analysis → 20 (max)

Multiple Engine Analysis

Use multiple engines simultaneously to get different perspectives on positions.

Multiple Engine Analysis

Compare evaluations from different engines simultaneously

How to use: Add multiple engines and enable them all for analysis

Engine Tournaments

Let engines play against each other to compare strength

How to use: Set up engine vs engine games with time controls

Consensus Analysis

Get agreement between engines on best moves

How to use: Look for moves suggested by multiple engines

Specialized Engines

Use different engines for different purposes

How to use: Stockfish for tactics, LC0 for positional understanding

Troubleshooting Guide

Common engine problems and their solutions.

Engine not responding

Symptoms:

  • Analysis doesn't start
  • Engine shows as "disconnected"
  • No move suggestions

Solutions to try:

  1. 1Check if engine file exists and is executable
  2. 2Verify engine path in settings
  3. 3Restart Pawn Appétit
  4. 4Try reducing Hash size if system is low on memory
  5. 5Check antivirus software isn't blocking the engine

Slow analysis

Symptoms:

  • Analysis takes very long
  • Engine seems stuck
  • Low depth reached

Solutions to try:

  1. 1Increase Hash size (more memory)
  2. 2Increase Threads (use more CPU cores)
  3. 3Close other resource-intensive applications
  4. 4Check if engine supports your CPU architecture (BMI2)
  5. 5Consider switching to a faster engine

Installation fails

Symptoms:

  • Download errors
  • Can't find executable
  • Permission denied

Solutions to try:

  1. 1Check internet connection for downloads
  2. 2Run Pawn Appétit as administrator (Windows)
  3. 3Verify file permissions (Linux/macOS)
  4. 4Temporarily disable antivirus during installation
  5. 5Try manual installation method

Engine crashes

Symptoms:

  • Sudden analysis stops
  • Error messages
  • Engine restarts frequently

Solutions to try:

  1. 1Reduce Hash size to prevent memory issues
  2. 2Update to latest engine version
  3. 3Check system stability (RAM test)
  4. 4Verify engine compatibility with your OS
  5. 5Try alternative engine as backup
